The General Assembly returned to Springfield this week for its annual veto session to consider the bills that the Governor vetoed over the summer. While they concentrate on the vetoes, legislators do discuss other new bills as well. The House Labor Committee passed SB 1941 out of committee to extend unemployment benefits for steelworkers affected by trade policies. Chairman Jay Hoffman and Jason Chism, President of USW Local 50, testified in support. The Illinois Nurses Association testified against privatization of nurses at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs facilities in committee this week. A number of labor bills were vetoed by the Governor over the summer, and many could not meet the 71 vote threshold in the House to reject the veto. Both chambers are scheduled to return on Tuesday, November 29th for the second week of veto session.
